"Enable Your DMs": Why You Cannot Apply on a Discord Server
The application bot could not DM you. Turn on Direct Messages in that server's Privacy Settings and press Apply again, or apply on the website instead.

You found the server, you read the rules, you press Apply and the bot answers with something like this:

I could not send you a DM. Allow DMs from this server's members (Privacy Settings), then press Apply again.
That is Mico's exact wording, and nothing is wrong with your application. You have not been refused. The bot simply cannot reach you, and it needs to.
Why does the bot need to message me?
On many Discord servers, applications do not happen in a channel. They happen in a private conversation between you and the bot, so nobody else sees your answers and you can take your time.
When you press Apply, the bot first tries to send you a DM with the start of the application. If Discord refuses to deliver it, the bot stops there and tells you why. It does not start an application you cannot reach.
Discord refuses that DM for one of a few reasons:
- You switched off DMs from members of that server
- You switched off DMs from server members for all new servers
- You blocked the bot at some point
- Discord had a brief hiccup (rare; pressing Apply again fixes it)
The first one is by far the most common.
How do I turn on DMs for one server?
You do not have to open your DMs to everyone. You can allow them for just the server you are applying to.
On a computer:
Open the server's menu
Click the server's name at the top of the channel list
Choose Privacy Settings
It is in the menu that drops down
Switch on Direct Messages
This allows DMs from members of this server, bots included
Press Apply again
Go back to the panel and press the button once more
On a phone: tap the server's name at the top of the channel list, find the Direct Messages switch in that server's settings, and turn it on. Then go back and press Apply.
If you also blocked Mico at some point, unblock it from its profile. A blocked bot cannot message you even with the switch on.
After that, pressing Apply shows a short reply instead: "Your application is waiting in your DMs." with an Open it button that takes you straight there.
What does the application look like in my DMs?
Once the DM arrives, you get a short intro: which server and panel, how many questions, and how long you have before an unfinished application closes by itself. Press Start and the questions come one at a time.

Staff applications
You are about to apply to Staff applications in Northwind.
3 questions, answered one at a time. You can go back and change an answer until you send it.
It closes by itself after 24 hours without an answer.

Question 2 of 3
███████░░░
A member posts a slur in general and deletes it a second later. What do you do?
Required · 20 to 1000 characters.
Your answer
Check the audit log and the message logger, time them out per the rules, note it in mod-log and tell the rest of the team.
1 required question left before you can send.
Each question shows whether it is required, how long your answer can be, and what you wrote so far. You can go back and change any answer until you press Send. Before sending you can press Check my answers to read the whole thing once more.
Why else would Apply say no?
DMs are only one reason. After you press Start in your DMs, the bot checks the server's rules for that panel. If one of them stops you, it tells you which. These are the messages, word for word, and what each one means:
| What the bot says | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| This panel is paused right now. Try again later. | Staff paused applications | Wait, or ask staff when it reopens |
| This panel is closed right now. Try again during its opening hours. | The panel only opens at certain times | Come back during its hours |
| This panel is not taking applications any more: it reached the number of people it accepts. | The places are filled | Watch for the next round |
| You already have an application in progress or waiting for this panel. | You started or sent one already | Finish it, or wait for the decision |
| You need a specific role to apply for this position. | The panel requires a role you do not have | Check the server's rules for how to get it |
| You are not allowed to apply for this position. | You have a role that cannot apply to this panel | Ask staff if you think it is a mistake |
| You can apply again in 3h 12m. | There is a waiting time after your last decision | Wait for the time shown |
| You must be in this server for at least 7 days to apply. | You joined too recently | Wait until you have been there long enough |
| The server is busy right now. Please try again in a moment. | Too many clicks at once | Press it again in a few seconds |
The numbers in the messages (hours, days) are set by each server, so yours may differ. Mico counts how long you have been in that server, not how old your Discord account is.
Servers set these rules to stop spam and repeat applications. If you run a server and want to know how they fit together, stopping spam applications with cooldowns and required roles explains each one.
What if the Apply button is grey or does nothing?
A grey Apply button that cannot be pressed means the panel is paused. That is a choice by the server's staff, not a fault on your side.
If the button looks normal but Discord shows "This interaction failed", the bot may be restarting or briefly offline. Wait a minute and try again. You can check whether Mico is running on its status page.
Can I apply on the website instead?
Yes, and if you do not want to open your DMs, this is the simplest way.
Under every Mico panel there is a View Online button next to Apply. It opens the same application on micoapp.io:
- Sign in with Discord (the server needs to know it is you)
- The page tells you right away whether you can apply, and if not, why
- Answer the questions in the browser, one at a time
- Check your answers and press Send
You still need to be a member of the server, and the same rules apply as on the Apply button. The website just skips the DM. Server admins can read more in how to let members apply from a website.
How do I check or withdraw what I sent?
You can come back to your application at any time from your DMs with Mico. Type /application there, and pick it from the list.
- /application
- In your DMs with Mico: continue an application you have not sent yet, or read one you sent and see its status
What you can do depends on where it is:
Your application, step by step
- Not sent yet
- Opens at the question you were on, so you can continue
- Sent, waiting
- Shows your answers and status, with a Withdraw button
- Accepted or denied
- Shows your answers and the result; it can no longer be withdrawn
Once you press Send, your answers cannot be changed. If you spot a mistake, the only option is to withdraw it while it is still waiting and, if the server allows it, apply again.
An application you started but did not finish closes by itself after some hours without an answer. The bot tells you when that happens, and the intro message says how long you have.
What the bot cannot do for you
Good fit
- It tells you exactly why it could not start your application
- It lets you apply on the website when your DMs stay closed
- It lets you continue, check or withdraw from your DMs
Not the right call
- It cannot change your Discord privacy settings for you
- It cannot skip a server's rules: cooldowns, roles and minimum days are set by staff
- It cannot reopen a paused panel or add places to a full one
- It cannot let you apply without a Discord account, on the website either
Once your DMs are on and the application has started, the rest is up to your answers. If it is a staff application, how to write a Discord staff application that gets accepted is worth a read before you press Send.

Frequently asked questions
The application happens in a private message between you and the bot, and your Discord settings stop the bot from messaging you. Usually that is the Direct Messages switch in the server's Privacy Settings. Turn it on for that server and press Apply again.
No. You can allow DMs for only the server you are applying to, from that server's Privacy Settings. Your other servers keep whatever you set before.
Yes, if the server uses Mico. Under the panel there is a View Online button. It opens the same application on micoapp.io, where you sign in with Discord and answer in the browser. You still need to be a member of the server.
A grey Apply button means the server's staff paused that panel. Nothing on your side will fix it. Wait until they open it again, or ask in the server when applications reopen.
Yes, while it is still waiting for a decision. In your DMs with Mico, type /application, pick it from the list and press Withdraw. You can also do it from My applications on micoapp.io. Once the team has decided, it can no longer be withdrawn.
